Indian Fabrics History

India’s rich natural resources for making and decorating textiles are unrivalled. Its varied geographical regions and climates provide a huge range of plant fibres and natural dyes for the cultivators, weavers, dyers, printers and embroiderers of the subcontinent. Over centuries, most regions developed specialities based on local resources, such as the golden silks of Assam, the fine cottons of Bengal, or the red dyes of south-east India. Craftspeople use an astonishing range of skills to process raw materials and produce regionally distinctive dyes, weaves, prints and embroideries.

The textiles made from it were first woven in Kashmir. The name comes from Persian: پشمینه‎ / pašmina, meaning "made from wool". ... Often shawls called shahmina are made from this material in Kashmir and Nepal; these shawls are hand spun and woven from the very fine cashmere fibre.

Phulkari (Punjabi: ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ) embroidery technique from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, literally means flower work, which was at one time used as the word for embroidery, but in time the word “Phulkari” became restricted to embroidered shawls and head scarfs.

Shawls from the Kullu valley, known as The Valley of the Gods, have been produced by hand for hundreds of years. Originally they were made by small hand looms and were plain without any designs. They were produced for practical reasons only to begin with; to keep warm during the cold winter months.

The Panchachuli (पंचाचुली) peaks are a group of five snow-capped Himalayan peaks lying at the end of the eastern Kumaon region, near Dugtu Village Darma valley, you can see panchchuli peak like you are lap of the panchchuli, and Munsiari, in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand state, India.

The Shisha embroidery was originated in the 17th century in India. Traditionally, shisheh or abhla bharat work was done using Mica but BeetleTinSilver or Coins were not uncommon depending on the region. This was replaced by glass blown into large thin bubbles and broken into small pieces for this use. Traditional shisha mirrors have a convex curve due to this process. The tradition of making circular shisha was extensively done by women in South Asia, who use special scissors that are repeatedly dampened to prevent flying shards, and snip them into smaller circular shapes.

                           Image result for CHIKANKARI
The technique of creation of a chikan work is known as chikankari (चिकनकारी چکن کاری). Chikan is a delicate and artfully done hand embroidery on a variety of textile fabric like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, etc. White thread is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light muslin and cotton garments. Nowadays chikan embroidery is also done with coloured and silk threads in colours to meet the fashion trends and keep chikankari up-to-date. Lucknow is the heart of the chikankari industry today and the variety is known as Lucknawi chikan.
Chikan work in the recent times has adapted additional embellishments like Mukaish, Kamdani, Badla, sequin, bead and mirror work, which gives it a rich look. Chikan embroidery is mostly done on fabrics like cotton, semi-Georgette, pure Georgette, crepe, chiffon, silk and any other fabric which is light and which highlights the embroidery. The fabric cannot be too thick or hard, else the embroidery needle won't pierce it.

An easy way to measure yourself at home for your blouses

Before you begin

Remember that all measurements are in INCHES

-When taking measurements the tape should be held flat against the body; it should be held snug enough so not to droop, but never so tight as to feel restrictive. It is best to be measured wearing the same undergarments, slip, strapless bra, body shaper you’ll be wearing the day of the wedding or event.

1. Blouse Length

Start at the center of the shoulder and draw the measuring tape straight down to the point where you want your blouse to end. Make sure that the tape passes over the center of the bust when taking this measurement.

2. Shoulder

Place the tape measure at the base of your neck and measure to your shoulder joint.

3. Sleeve Length

If you are getting a sleeveless blouse you can skip this step. Place the measuring tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure down the arm from there until you have the desired sleeve length.

4. Sleeve Open

The measurement helps determine how wide to cut the width of the sleeves.Keep arms relaxed by your side.Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bicep.

5. Arm Hole

Keep arms relaxed by your side. Place the measuring tape at the top of the shoulder in line with your armpit. Wrap the tape inder the arm and over the end of your shoulder to the straight point. The tape measure should feel snug but not tight.

6. Front Neck

Start at the top of the shoulder at the neck point and draw the measuring tape diagonally to the center of your chest to the point where you want your blouse neck opening to end.

7. Back Neck

Start at the top of the shoulder at the neck point and draw the measuring tape diagonally, make a half V , to the center of your back and choose how much depth you would like Measure around the widest part of your thigh

8. Point

9. Height

10. Distance

11. U. Chest

Start at the top of the shoulder at the neck point to the bust. Make sure the measuring tape is straight all the way around the chest and back

12. Chest

Place the measuring tape around the fullest part of the bust. Make sure the measuring tape is straight all the way around the chest and back.

13. Waist

Take this measurement just above the waist below the bust. This is where the blouse will end. Be sure to measure all the way around.
